Someone on here made the point that it took them a few years before they got a clear idea about what they wanted to make. I can relate to that. I’m starting to think that I’d like to do a cabinet type build so maybe a plough plane would help with that. There are plenty of old Stanley’s knocking around on Ebay. On the other hand, I’m in no hurry to buy anything else – I feel much more inclined now to make do and explore the limitations of tools that I’ve got.
Wood routers come in many different sizes and matching the right size router to the job at hand will help you produce better results. If you will mostly be using your router to soften edges and create small profile areas out of a workpiece, than a compact trim router with a 1 to 1.5 HP engine is your best bet. Their small size allows them to easily be used in a variety of orientations and in compact areas where using a larger router would be problematic.
While it is possible to rip thin stock using only the table saw’s fence, you have to remove the guard and squeeze your stock and push stick through the dangerously narrow gap between the blade and your fence. Can you say “kickback”? Even if you successfully navigate this dangerous cut, you inevitably end up with burn marks and uneven cuts that have to be sanded out.

So, where does this tool go wrong? For starters, the blade didn’t want to quite get to zero degrees. Naturally, this means it’s not going to deliver a straight cut. While the blade is getting up to speed, the entire saw vibrates and makes a very disconcerting grinding type of noise. Definitely not something that inspires confidence! The fence also didn’t want to stay straight and tended to migrate during use. All in all, it’s a great feature set for the price, but the cheap construction is not built to last.

Many DIY hobbyists may be attracted to the incredibly low price and small footprint of the Rockwell BladeRunner X2. At just under 15 pounds, it’s light and easily storable, thanks to its very small stature. The 3,000 RPM max speed isn’t anything great, but at this price, it’s hard to expect anything more. It’s packed with gimmicky features that just don’t work very well, such as the rip fence, miter gauge, and the vacuum port. They would be great, but they just don’t function as well as you’d hope. The three-year warranty is a pleasant surprise though.
Electronic feedback circuitry can be useful to increase the lifespan of the engine and make the wood router easier to handle. Essentially it monitors the engine load and adjusts the torque to match. This prevents the router motor from lagging or stalling when hitting dense patches of wood, which also helps reduce the chance of it spinning out of control when it suddenly speeds up again.
If you’ve shopped online, you know you don’t always get the quality that you think you’re going to get. When making a big purchase like a table saw, you don’t want to make that mistake. If you need to get the most bang for your buck, then you’ve come to the right place. It’s not always obvious which features are important and which are not, but we’ve done the hard work for you.
Other than the panel saw, all my kit fits into a 50x33x17cm wooden wine box. After years of relying on power tools for everything, I’ve found this minimalist approach very refreshing. Asking myself ‘will it fit in the box?’ helps me to curb ‘add to basket’ tendencies. My only additions to your list are a Stanley No. 18 block plane, a Lie Nielsen dowel plate and a small engineers set square, all non-essential but they do get used.
