The other kind of portable table saw is the wheeled/folding leg variety. The wheeled models come with wheels that can be used to roll them for place to place. The folding leg variety may or may not have wheels. Both models feature a mechanism by which they can be raised up and used without a table. This is what sets them apart from benchtop models.

So, where does this tool go wrong? For starters, the blade didn’t want to quite get to zero degrees. Naturally, this means it’s not going to deliver a straight cut. While the blade is getting up to speed, the entire saw vibrates and makes a very disconcerting grinding type of noise. Definitely not something that inspires confidence! The fence also didn’t want to stay straight and tended to migrate during use. All in all, it’s a great feature set for the price, but the cheap construction is not built to last.

Solid tool, works fantastic. Before buying my own I borrowed several jig saws at different times for projects. They were always "eh, it'll work". I'm glad I bought this for myself. Don't have to borrow anything and this jigsaw is vastly superior to the ones I was borrowed. Cuts straight, easier to change the blade, more power behind you (looks cool too) and comes with a nice case to boot.

Listened to other reviewer's modifications to make it better and wow, it is doing exactly what I wanted. Modification 1: Add 8 x M6 lock washers to the cross sections on both legs. This will significantly add to stability. Modification 2: Throw away the pins used to keep the roller knobs on and replace with two 8-32 x 1-1/4 inch machine screws and 8-32 nylon insert lock nuts. That will make the putting the knobs on very easy and just as easy to get back off. Total cost for mods from Home Depot: $2.
The DEWALT DWE7491RS is an incredible saw, but it provides portability at a great price point. The set of wheels on this model is great for moving it from jobsite-to-jobsite without too much effort. The folding legs are also superior to the support systems on other models, and they make it so that you always have a stable platform on which to work, without adding too much weight to the machine.

My Stanley 51/2 was in a bit of a state when I got it and refurbing it took a bit of time and cash. Now it works a treat and looks like new. I’m nearly through the bench build and have spend hours using it – it really is a workhorse piece of kit. I did some final cleaning up of some oak legs the other day and I can’t really see how a smaller plain would do a better job.

The last tool I recommend for every beginning woodworker is a quality router. While many routers available today offer two different bases (a stationary base and a plunge router base), for most beginners, a quality stationary base model will take care of quite a number of tasks, and can also be mounted in a router table should you choose to invest in (or even build one) one down the line. Choose a router model that is at least 2-HP and has electronic variable speed controls (as larger cutting bits should use slower speeds), a soft start mechanism and is easy to make bit changes (preferably with the ability to use both 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch shank router bits).
Wood routers come in many different sizes and matching the right size router to the job at hand will help you produce better results. If you will mostly be using your router to soften edges and create small profile areas out of a workpiece, than a compact trim router with a 1 to 1.5 HP engine is your best bet. Their small size allows them to easily be used in a variety of orientations and in compact areas where using a larger router would be problematic.
Electronic feedback circuitry can be useful to increase the lifespan of the engine and make the wood router easier to handle. Essentially it monitors the engine load and adjusts the torque to match. This prevents the router motor from lagging or stalling when hitting dense patches of wood, which also helps reduce the chance of it spinning out of control when it suddenly speeds up again.
This saw is so much better than the old Black and Decker that it is replacing. The base plate is solid, the blade changes are simple, the motor has plenty of power, and the saw runs very smooth with little vibration. I have noticed a slight undercut that has been mentioned on other reviews. I tried to quantify it. If I have the orbital adjustment set to its least aggressive setting and I use a fine-cut blade, making a straight cut, I have measured a 1/32" deeper cut on the bottom of a 3/4" piece of wood stock. That may not sound like much, however if you make curved cuts, this will be noticeable with cuts in the curved areas not being at 90 degree angles to the surface. I do not have experience with other high-end jig saws to know if this an expected/common behavior. Just be warned that ... full review
That being said, they provide the best cuts out of any of these machines. They’re low vibration, have the greatest power, and since they’re not being moved around, they tend to be better calibrated. They also tend to come with higher-quality fences and miter gauges, which means that you can achieve the highest degree of accuracy when making cuts on cabinet table saws.

Power: What kind of woodworking will you do, how often will you do it and what kind of materials will you use? If portability is important, you'll want a jobsite saw. If you're a hobbyist and want a saw that can handle most home shop requirements, a contractor saw might be right for you. If you run a professional shop, you might want the power and durability of a cabinet saw.
